FAQ Corner
Q: How do liens and medical bills affect my settlement?
A: Medical bills and liens play a major role in how much you ultimately receive from your settlement. Your settlement has to cover not just your compensation, but also the medical providers or insurers who have a legal right to be repaid.
Here’s how it works:
- Medical bills: Your total medical expenses help determine the value of your case. Higher medical bills often mean a higher overall settlement.
- Health insurance liens: If your health insurance (or Medicare/Medicaid) paid some of your bills, they most likely will place a lien on your case and must be reimbursed from your settlement.
- Provider liens: If a doctor treated you on a lien or “treat now, pay later” basis, they are paid out of your settlement once your case resolves.
- Negotiation matters: Your attorney can often negotiate reductions on medical bills and liens, which increases the amount you take home.
- Your final recovery: After attorney fees, case costs, and lien payments are resolved, the remaining amount is what you receive as your net recovery.
In short, liens and medical bills directly affect how much you put in your pocket — and skilled lien negotiations can significantly increase your net recovery. Letting your attorney handle this process helps protect your rights and maximize your recovery.

Did you know that RFW offers an annual community service scholarship that you can apply for?
We are proud to continue our tradition of supporting students who make a difference. Each year, we offer the R.F. Wittmeyer Community Service Scholarship to recognize and reward students who give back to their communities.
While our firm is focused on serving our clients, we believe that community service deserves to be celebrated. That’s why we created this scholarship—to help students who are already making an impact continue their education and expand their ability to serve others.
We are pleased to offer this scholarship to a high school senior, college student, or graduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to community service and will be enrolled at a 2–4 year post-secondary institution in the upcoming semester, while meeting the eligibility requirements.

From Our Clients… ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“I had a very positive experience working with my attorney Marina, case manager Gianina, as well as legal assistant, Ann. They represented me in a personal injury matter during a very challenging time. Marina was professional, knowledgeable, and a strong advocate throughout the process. Their communication was clear and consistent, and I felt well supported from start to finish. I was very satisfied with the settlement outcome and appreciated how efficiently the case was handled. I highly recommend R. F. Wittmeyer.”
