February 2015 Newsletter
Happy Presidents’ Day – February 16th!
In Illinois, Presidents’ Day gives us a special opportunity to remember and honor the legal legacy of President Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president. After gaining recognition as a legislator, Lincoln was encouraged to study law by prominent attorney Steven Logan.
Lincoln was a self-taught lawyer, driven by his love for reading. He often read aloud and studied Blackstone’s Commentaries before passing the Illinois Supreme Court’s examination. He received his license to practice law in 1836 at the age of 25, and began working a year later as a junior partner to John T. Stuart, his mentor. Lincoln is celebrated as an exceptional trial lawyer, known for his distinctive courtroom presence.

Cameras Approved in Cook County Courtrooms
On January 5th, a new pilot program was launched allowing cameras in the criminal courtrooms at the Leighton Criminal Court Building in Chicago. Media can now request to record and photograph felony hearings and trials.
This initiative, supported by the Illinois State Bar Association, follows earlier camera programs in smaller counties since 2012. Cook County’s program will help evaluate the long-term impact of courtroom transparency.
