The town was formed due to a series of inns and restaurants on what is today Milwaukee Avenue, which still has many great restaurants, such as Bob Chinn’s Crab House and Superdawg’s. “Bob Chinn’s Crab House has expanded and grown to be the 4th top grossing independent restaurant in the United States, with 21 million dollars in sales, serving close to 1,000,000 guests in 1996, and employing more than 320 workers.” Wheeling is also home to the Chicago Executive Airport, formerly Palwaukee Airport, which can be found at Palatine Rd. and Milwaukee Ave. Wheeling residents attend 5 elementary schools and 3 middle schools found in District 21, and most high school students attend Wheeling High School, on Elmhurst Rd.

Wheeling Township

Additionally, most of Wheeling is contained in Wheeling Township, which also includes parts of Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, and Des Plaines. Wheeling Township was incorporated in 1850 with a “Support the Poor” program. To this day, Wheeling Township provides many services such as:

Another program is Access to Care. “The program is designed for low-income residents who are uninsured, or those who have insurance but have large deductibles. It provides low cost primary health care for both children and adults including office visits prescriptions and laboratory services. The program provides diagnosis and treatments for a small fee. Call 259-7730 to make an appointment or to apply for the program.” Additionally, “Low cost immunizations are available for children up to age 18 on the second Monday of every month from 5:00-7:00pm at the Village of Arlington Heights, 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. Cost: $10.00 per shot and appointments are necessary.”
