Call 911 and make sure an ambulance is on the way if someone is severely injured. Then, document everything that has happened. This means getting a license plate number, taking pictures, and taking detailed notes. Be sure to obtain the other party’s insurance company and policy number. As for their vehicle, document their vehicle’s type and model.

On the scene, get witness information such as their names, phone numbers, descriptions, and the location of the accident.

When Officer Arrives on The Scene

When and if the police arrive, they will ask you some questions. The key is to cooperate with the officer but keep your comments brief. Anything you say at the accident will be included in a police report and may be used in any claims you initiate. Stick to the facts of what occurred at the accident. Make sure you get a copy of the police report and find out what agency the police officer is with. It may also be useful to take down any information about the vehicle the police officer is driving.

At this time, be sure not to admit any liability for the accident as you should not admit fault post-accident, and responsibilities will be determined once facts undergo review. Once the police have the necessary information, you may leave the accident scene. If your car needs to be towed with a tow truck, be sure to get the information regarding where your vehicles are getting taken.
