LAW OFFICES OF R.F. WITTMEYER IN KENOSHA
Did you know we’ve proudly called Kenosha home for the past seven years?
What started as a small office has grown into an important part of our firm’s Wisconsin presence, serving clients throughout Kenosha and the surrounding communities with the same dedication and results-driven approach we bring to our Arlington Heights office.
Today, our Kenosha office is led by a close-knit team of three: attorney James Payne and paralegals Margo and Francis. Together, they guide clients through every stage of the personal injury process while handling the same types of cases we manage across all our locations.
A Space That’s Growing with Us
You’ll find us in the heart of downtown Kenosha at 520 58th Street, just blocks from the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s a charming, walkable neighborhood filled with local character, and one we’re proud to be part of.
In fact, we’ve grown so much that we’ve outgrown our current office space. We’re excited to be expanding into a larger office on the second floor of the same building. Plans are already underway to update the new space with refreshed finishes and a new kitchenette — easily one of the most exciting parts of the move.
The expansion is part of our continued effort to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment for both our team and our clients.
Part of the Community We Serve
Our commitment to Kenosha goes beyond the office walls. We proudly support and participate in local organizations and events, including the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Kenosha/Racine Habitat for Humanity Community Build Week.
We’ve also supported community initiatives such as the Kenosha Safety Fund and the Shop with a Cop program. It’s a privilege to help strengthen and support the community we serve every day.
During the summer months, you’ll also find us cheering on the Kenosha Kingfish, the local collegiate baseball team. If you attend a game, keep an eye out for our banner along the third-base line and enjoy a fun, family-friendly day at the ballpark.
A Great Place to Visit
One of the best parts about our location is everything surrounding it. Our office is within walking distance of Kenosha’s lakefront, scenic parks, museums, and even the city’s historic electric streetcar.
It’s the kind of place where a quick visit can easily turn into a relaxing stroll along the harbor. And if you stop by, we highly recommend grabbing a bite at Frank’s Diner — a local landmark that has been serving the community for more than 100 years and happens to be located right next door.
Stay Connected
We’re proud of the relationships we’ve built in Kenosha and look forward to continuing to grow alongside this incredible community. Be sure to follow our RFW Kenosha Facebook page for updates, events, and more.
A RENEWED COMMITMENT TO WHAT MATTERS MOST
At our firm, growth isn’t just about results — it’s also about reflection.
Over the past several months, we took time to evaluate who we are, how we serve, and what matters most to our clients, team members, and community. Through thoughtful discussions and collaborative sessions across the firm, we refined and reaffirmed the principles that guide everything we do.
The result is an updated mission statement and a renewed focus on our core values that better reflects both where we’ve been and where we’re headed.
Our mission is simple but powerful:
“Grounded in integrity and compassion, we advocate for injured individuals and families who have suffered the wrongful death of a loved one. We are dedicated to providing exceptional personal service, treating everyone with respect, and pursuing the best possible outcomes so our clients can focus on healing. We foster a supportive workplace and remain deeply committed to strengthening the communities we serve.”
That mission has always been at the heart of our work. Putting it into words collaboratively gave us an opportunity to align around a shared vision and recommit ourselves to the standards we uphold every day.
Alongside our mission, we revisited our core values. These are not simply words on a page — they are expectations we strive to live by daily.
Being Results-Driven means pursuing the best possible outcome in every client’s case through careful preparation, attention to detail, and decisive action.
Leading with Integrity means upholding the highest ethical standards through honesty, transparency, and trustworthiness while always protecting our clients’ best interests.
Practicing Compassion means treating every client and colleague with professionalism, empathy, patience, and genuine care during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Prioritizing Communication means keeping clients informed and involved throughout every step of the legal process through timely updates, clear guidance, and responsive support.
Fostering Culture and Growth reflects our commitment to teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and creating a healthy, rewarding workplace.
This process also reinforced something we’ve long believed: the strength of our firm comes from our people. By including our entire team in these conversations, we ensured our mission and values reflect the collective voice of those who live them every day.
As we move forward, these guiding principles will continue shaping how we serve our clients and support one another. While the legal landscape continues to evolve, our purpose remains the same — making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who trust us to advocate for them.
ARE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES RESPONSIBLE FOR ADDICTION?
Social media has become part of everyday life. Whether it’s scrolling through Meta, watching videos on YouTube, or checking in with friends online, most people rarely think about how these platforms are designed.
But a recent court case is beginning to change that conversation.
In a closely watched lawsuit, plaintiffs argued that social media companies did more than simply create platforms. Instead, they claimed these systems were intentionally designed to keep users engaged for long periods of time through features such as endless scrolling, push notifications, and highly personalized content.
For the first time, a court showed a willingness to seriously consider those arguments.
Why This Case Matters
Traditionally, social media companies have been viewed as neutral platforms where users post and consume content. This case challenged that idea and raised an important question:
What if these platforms function more like products specifically engineered to influence behavior and maximize engagement?
The Design Behind the Scroll
Think about the last time you opened a social media app. Did you plan to spend as much time as you actually did?
Many platforms are intentionally built around features designed to keep users returning, including:
- Infinite scrolling with no natural stopping point
- Notifications that constantly pull users back in
- Content tailored specifically to individual interests
- Unpredictable rewards such as likes, comments, and new posts
These features are rooted in behavioral science and are specifically designed to increase user engagement.
What About the Impact?
Researchers have spent years studying the effects of heavy social media use, particularly among teens and young adults. Some commonly reported concerns include:
- Increased anxiety and stress
- Sleep disruption
- Lower self-esteem tied to comparison culture
While experts continue debating the exact strength of these connections, the conversation surrounding mental health and screen time continues to grow louder.
What This Could Mean Going Forward
This case does not settle the issue, but it may signal a broader shift in how courts and the public view social media companies.
We may begin seeing:
- More lawsuits focused on platform design
- Greater pressure on technology companies to include safety features
- Increased transparency about how apps keep users engaged
For individuals and families, it also serves as an important reminder to be more aware of how these platforms influence daily habits and behaviors.
ATTORNEY SPOTLIGHT: James M. Payne
Attorney James M. Payne
At our firm, every attorney brings a unique perspective to their work, but all share the same commitment to advocating for clients when it matters most.
For James M. Payne, that commitment is rooted in perseverance, teamwork, and a deep understanding of what’s at stake for the people he represents.
One moment that stands out most in James’s career involved a seriously injured client whose insurance company initially offered only $80,000 — far below what was fair.
James believed the offer was insufficient and promised his client they would pursue every dollar she deserved. What followed was a two-year legal battle.
Through persistence, preparation, and teamwork, James and the firm ultimately secured the full $250,000 policy amount for the client. For James, however, the most meaningful moment was delivering the good news directly to her.
It’s that combination of determination and personal connection that defines his approach to practicing law.
The Power of Progress
For James, success is not only about outcomes — it’s also about steady progress.
“A good day at work is one where we’re moving a case forward. The biggest breakthroughs don’t happen overnight. They come from the steady work put in day after day, sometimes over months or even years.”
That long-term mindset is especially important in personal injury law, where patience and persistence often make all the difference.
James also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, recognizing that successful results are rarely achieved alone. Strong collaboration and shared strategy are essential to obtaining justice for clients.
A Foundation Built on Perspective
Early in his legal career, James worked closely with a judge in criminal court — an experience that gave him a deeper appreciation for how the legal system functions behind the scenes.
That perspective continues shaping how he approaches every case today.
“It reinforced that the law is ultimately about people. There’s a responsibility to pursue justice, but also to recognize the human side of every case.”
Looking Ahead
James closely follows how emerging technologies such as electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and evolving digital evidence are beginning to reshape the legal landscape.
For him, these advancements represent an opportunity to better serve clients in an increasingly complex world.
Outside the office, James enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and two sons. Having grown up in Waukesha County, he’s also a proud Green Bay Packers fan and enjoys anything related to space and science fiction.
We’re fortunate to have James representing many of our Wisconsin-based clients and look forward to many more years of his dedication and advocacy.
