Mount Prospect, IL Personal Injury Lawyer

Mount ProspectFounded in the early 1900s, Mount Prospect, on the Northwest side of Chicago, is the next town over from Arlington Heights, home of the Law Offices of R.F. Wittmeyer, Ltd. Mount Prospect began as a small village due to its location next to the railroad tracks and blossomed into a village of over 50,000 people. Central to Mount Prospect is its Metra station and cozy downtown with many shops and restaurants for residents, such as Capannari Ice Cream and Central Continental Bakery, which makes fantastic Blackhawks cookies during hockey season! Additionally, Mount Prospect is home to Randhurst Village, formerly Randhurst Mall, which was the first indoor air-conditioned mall in the upper Midwest. Randhurst Village is home to many great restaurants, stores, and a movie theater, such as Blackfinn American Grille and E&O Food and Drink. In 2008, Mount Prospect was voted the best city in which to raise children. And for the movie buffs out there, in The Blues Brothers, the car the Blues Brothers ride in is described as being bought at auction from the Mount Prospect Police Department. A replica of the car drives in the Mount Prospect Fourth of July parade every year.

The Metra Northwest line that connects the Northwest suburbs with Chicago runs through downtown Mount Prospect after stopping in Arlington Heights and Palatine. Each morning and evening, hundreds of residents board trains on their way to work at the station is located on Northwest Highway between Emerson Street and Route 83/Elmhurst Rd. Like the other nearby suburbs, Mount Prospect is very close to O’Hare International Airport, the Allstate Arena, and Arlington Racetrack. Mount Prospect is also home to Prospect High School, where Ronald Wittmeyer attended.

Bicylce Accident in Mount Prospect

In June, a driver struck and killed a 55-year old woman riding her bicycle in Mount Prospect on Central Road near Melas Park and Westbrook School. Police revealed that the woman who was driving the car was the person who caused the collision. The bicyclist triggered a crosswalk beacon to signal to cars the presence of a pedestrian. Crossing beacons are installed on traffic signal poles with regulatory warning signs to try to alert the driver of a crosswalk when the driver approaches the crosswalk. As a motorist, you must recognize that bicyclists have the right of way. Bicyclists have all the rights of drivers of cars and trucks. Irregardless of the presence of a crossing beacon, if you or someone you love have been injured in Mount Prospect by a car while riding a bicycle, contact the Law Offices of R.F. Wittmeyer, Ltd. today for a free consultation.

Car Accidents in Mount Prospect

With a close proximity to the Jane Addams Expressway and having many major Illinois highways right through the middle, including Northwest Highway, Rand Road, Elmhurst Road, and Busse Road, Mount Prospect residents run the risk of being involved in car or truck accidents. For example, on January 21, minor injuries were reported when a Ford truck hit a Dodge truck heading south on Busse Road during rush hour. One of the drivers was turning into his apartment complex and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The driver received a citation for his failure to yield when turning left. Due to the number of people driving through Mount Prospect each day, it is important to stay vigilant and cautious when driving.

Train Related Accidents in Mount Prospect

TrainEach day several trains run through Mount Prospect on express lines that do not pick up commuters in Mount Prospect. Additionally, many freight trains use the same tracks to deliver cargo to many far-reaching places across the United States. Unfortunately, accidents occur on these train lines to cars, trucks, and pedestrians.

In 2011, a semi-truck carrying a load of concrete driving northwest on Northwest Highway attempted to turn left onto Mount Prospect Road, but according to witnesses, the train crossing gates were down, the warning lights operational and the no left turn sign illuminated. The 8:37 train was leaving the Mount Prospect station and hit the truck , derailing the front two cars. 28 passengers from the train were transported to area hospitals (Lutheran General, Northwest Community, etc), while other passengers were treated at the scene and released. And due to this accident the driver of the truck lost his life. According to published reports, “passengers said fire engulfed the front passenger cab after the train clipped the fully loaded dump truck west of the Cumberland train station about 8:40 a.m.”

Unfortunately, more recently, in August 2015, a pedestrian was killed by a train running an express route. “Right now, it appears her attempt was to cross the tracks, basically trying to beat the train,” said Mount Prospect Police Officer Greg Sill.

Train tracks can be very dangerous places when people do not pay attention to all of the warning signs, such as the flashing lights, the gates, and the bells. Whenever you are heading downtown or riding a train to a neighboring suburb from Mount Prospect, please pay attention and stay safe.
