Fireworks Safety

Did you know that “fireworks” are illegal in Illinois? Illinois has adopted some of the strictest laws pertaining to fireworks safety.  The term fireworks has been specifically defined by Illinois law to basically be anything that will go into the air and explode. Luckily sparklers, noise makers, toy guns and anything under twenty-five hundredths grains or less of explosive compound can still be used to celebrate the Fourth of July. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t purchase it in Illinois then it is more than likely illegal.

Fireworks Safety – By County

In Illinois, each county is allowed to pass an ordinance allowing public displays of fireworks. The public displays are always the safest way to get the best show here in Illinois. The shows are always done by professionals who understand fireworks safety and take measures to ensure no to harm the audience. Typically, the shows are free as well.

Each county also does have the ability to regulate novelties such as snakes, sparklers, and party-poppers to demonstrate their own measures of fireworks safety. Counties are also able to regulate the use of sparklers on different properties, so always be aware of the applicable law. While legal, sparklers present a serious danger because of the high temperature of the wire during and after its use.

Fireworks Safety – Sparklers

Sparklers burn at temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Children should never be allowed to use fireworks. Of the 9,800 fireworks-related injuries in 2007, almost half occurred in children under the age of 15. This makes it crucial for an adult to be supervising any use of novelty fireworks this season. Even novelty fireworks have the ability to ignite under extremely hot temperatures and precautions need to be taken to ensure fireworks safety.

It’s also important to keep all fireworks away from open flame and hot weather to avoid an unwanted explosion. Summer can be a lot of fun, but safety needs to be a top priority, whether one is driving a car or captaining a boat. Being safe over this holiday can ensure fireworks safety of yourself and your loved ones. Be safe and have happy Fourth of July!
